Harry Belafonte, whose full name was Harold George Bellanfanti Jr., was born on March 1 in Harlem, New York. He used to go to Jamaica to see his grandma when he was younger. He was raised in a blended family with roots in both Jamaican and Afro-American cultures.
He attended George Washington High School after moving back to New York and participated in the Navy during World War II. He performed his civic duty and subsequently laboured as a janitor’s assistant before realizing his penchant for theatre.
At The New School in New York, where he studied acting under eminent actors including Marlon Brando, Tony Curtis, Walter Matthau, Bea Arthur, and Sidney Poitier, Belafonte completed his studies.
